Miguel Jose Matos
has been a Hartford resident for 20 years and began painting in 2017 with no formal art training/education.
He “lets his hand follow the brush” and never goes into a piece knowing what the end result will be, since sketching does not replace improvisation. It now has become a routine adventure, sometimes painting 3 to 5 canvas pieces weekly. In each way, a piece ends as a surprise to himself, his family, and his followers. It was with inspiration from artists like Basquiat, who remains one of Matos’ biggest artistic influences, that this talented prolific Puerto Rican creator mastered his own style, producing a body of work consisting of at least 200 canvas paintings and several wooden sculptures. His home studio is located on Columbia Street in Hartford.
After his first public exhibit at 224 Ecospace, his works were selected to be a part of an exhibit at Upward Hartford. In 2018 he was appointed Resident Artist by Upward Hartford leadership. Since then, the art has been featured in the Hartford Courant and NBC shows Chicago MD & PD. In 2024, Matos was named Director and Curator of the Parkville Art Gallery, which will be opening later this year.
